Tanzania is a year-round safari destination, but the best time for wildlife viewing is during the dry season from June to October, especially for the wildebeest migration. Below is a simple month-by-month guide to help you choose the best time to visit.
January marks the beginning of Tanzania’s short dry season, with occasional afternoon showers that quickly clear. It is an excellent time to travel thanks to high lodge availability and lower rates across most regions. This is also the peak of the Great Migration calving season in the southern Serengeti, where thousands of wildebeest give birth, attracting intense predator activity and offering dramatic wildlife encounters.
The landscapes are at their most vibrant—lush, green, and alive with thousands of migratory birds—making it a perfect time for photography. While the scenery is stunning, thicker vegetation in some southern parks can make wildlife slightly harder to spot, though the overall safari experience remains rich and rewarding.
February in Tanzania is hot and mostly dry, making it a good time to visit with fewer crowds and lower rates across many destinations. It is the peak of the wildebeest calving season in the southern Serengeti, bringing strong predator activity and excellent wildlife viewing. This is also a great month for birding, especially in Selous and Ruaha, with vibrant landscapes providing perfect conditions for photography, including sightings of newborn animals.
The weather can be intense, particularly along the coast, where Zanzibar experiences some of the highest temperatures of the year, reaching up to 40°C, which may feel too hot for some travelers. In the southern regions, the combination of heat and conditions can also mean an increase in mosquitoes, though the safari experience remains rewarding.
March in Tanzania marks the beginning of the long rains and is one of the wettest months of the year. Tropical afternoon downpours are common, but they often come and go quickly. With fewer travelers during this time, many camps and lodges offer excellent value for money, and availability is generally high across destinations.
The scenery is at its most vibrant, with lush greenery, blooming flowers, and dramatic cloudy skies that create beautiful conditions for photography. It is still part of the calving season, and birdlife is especially rich during this period. However, the combination of heat and humidity also brings an increase in insects, particularly in wetter areas.
April is the peak of the wet season in Tanzania, as the long rains fully set in with frequent and heavy downpours. Travel during this time comes with significant cost advantages, as many properties reduce their rates—sometimes by half compared to the high season. However, accessibility can be limited, especially in southern and western parks where many camps close due to road conditions.
Despite the rain, the landscapes are incredibly lush and dramatic, offering unique photographic opportunities, including views of the migration herds beginning to move north with their young. The combination of high humidity and standing water can also bring an increase in mosquitoes, which may affect overall comfort for some travelers.
May in Tanzania marks the final stretch of the long rains, with conditions gradually drying toward the end of the month. It is one of the best times to witness the Great Migration as the massive herds move north in search of fresh grazing. While some areas remain wet, this period offers fewer crowds and unique wildlife experiences, especially in the Serengeti.
The landscapes are still lush and vibrant, creating excellent conditions for photography, particularly with large herds on the move. It’s also a rewarding time for birdwatching, with many migratory species present. On the coast, Zanzibar can experience heavy and prolonged rainfall, sometimes lasting for days.
June in Tanzania marks the start of the dry season, bringing clear skies, warm daytime sunshine, and cooler mornings and evenings. It is one of the best times for safaris, as wildlife becomes easier to spot with thinning vegetation and animals gathering around remaining water sources. A major highlight is the wildebeest migration crossing the Grumeti River in the western Serengeti, offering dramatic wildlife action.
This is also an excellent month to combine safari and beach experiences, with great conditions both inland and along the coast. With little to no rain, mosquitoes are minimal, making travel more comfortable. As it is the beginning of the high season, booking in advance is highly recommended.
July is one of the best times to visit Tanzania, falling in the middle of the dry, peak season with consistently warm weather and outstanding wildlife viewing. It is a prime safari month, with the Serengeti’s Great Migration crossing rivers, along with excellent sightings of elephants in Tarangire and chimpanzees in Mahale.
As a peak travel month, availability is limited and popular areas can become busy, so early booking is strongly recommended. July is also the driest month of the year, with very little rainfall, which can result in dusty roads but excellent game viewing conditions overall.
August is widely considered the best month to visit Tanzania, offering peak safari conditions with dry, warm days and cool, comfortable nights. It is one of the ultimate times for wildlife viewing, as animals gather around limited water sources, creating consistent and rewarding game encounters across the parks.
While the northern safari circuit remains busy, the southern regions are quieter yet equally impressive for game viewing. Highlights include the Great Migration river crossings in the Serengeti and large elephant herds moving through Tarangire National Park. With excellent conditions and high demand, early booking is strongly advised.
September marks the end of the dry season in Tanzania, bringing some of the highest concentrations of wildlife around limited water sources. It is a rewarding time for safaris, as the Great Migration herds begin moving back south from Kenya, often resulting in dramatic river crossing sightings.
While northern parks such as the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater can be busy with safari traffic, the game viewing remains exceptional. Southern parks offer a quieter alternative with fewer visitors, making them ideal for a more private experience. September is also one of the best months to climb Mount Kilimanjaro due to the stable, dry conditions.
October is one of the best months to visit Tanzania, with peak safari conditions still in full effect across the main parks. Availability is limited and rates remain high, so early booking is essential. It is also a great time to combine safari and beach experiences, with warm, clear days ideal for both inland and coastal travel.
Early October still offers chances to see the Great Migration mega-herds spread across the northern Serengeti before they move further south. Wildlife is concentrated around remaining water sources, creating excellent game viewing opportunities. Toward the end of the month, occasional rains may begin to appear, signaling the transition to the green season.
November marks the beginning of Tanzania’s short rainy season, with most rainfall occurring overnight or in short bursts during the day. Tourist numbers drop significantly, making it a quieter time to visit, with good availability and more affordable rates across many properties.
It is also an important movement period for the Great Migration as herds travel through the Serengeti toward the southern short-grass plains. November is one of the best months for whale shark encounters off Mafia Island, adding a unique marine experience to the season. As humidity increases with the rains, mosquito activity also becomes more noticeable in some areas.
December is a beautiful transition month in Tanzania, marking the start of the “emerald” season as the landscapes turn greener and more vibrant each day. Large wildebeest herds gather across the Serengeti plains in preparation for the upcoming calving season, creating excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. It is also a peak travel period for Christmas holidays, so early booking is highly recommended.
This month is especially rewarding for birdwatchers, with thousands of migratory species arriving across the country. While conditions are generally warm and lush, weather can be mixed and less predictable. In Zanzibar, temperatures are very hot, dry, and humid, often reaching the early 40s, making it intense for some travelers.
Tanzania offers one of the most diverse and rewarding safari experiences in Africa, with vast landscapes that support an incredible variety of wildlife. EXCELLENT Based on 50 reviews Posted on Silvia MVerified Unique experience through Dar Es Salam with an amazing guide! I had a private tour with a very special guide (Norman Shayo from Unique Safari LTD) through Dar es Salaam' a streets, artisan markets, colours, food and beautiful moments. Norman is well prepared, kind, attentive and always available, and went also out of the program to give even a better experience. Highly recommended! Thanks Richard and have a beautiful life together with your family!Posted on travel 360Verified Visit Mikumi National park from Dar es salaam For Mikumi safaris you may choose this safaris Company which is also recomended by ATA Safaris ... they have best safaris plan for Mikumi national parks operates from Dar es salaamPosted on Jasper KVerified Awesome one day safari in Mikumi! My family and I had a great experience during this safari! After waking up early and travelling to the train station, the rest of the day was planned meticulously. I had planned the trip the previous week by contacting Norman Shayo of Safari Unique Unlimited through whatsapp (+255754292801), and we were able to plan the safari without any trouble. He was available for any questions and ensured that our safari went according to plan. We travelled by high speed train to Morogoro and were subsequently picked up by a car waiting for us that took us to Mikumi. We arrived at the park and transferred to a open roof car where we could look around completely unobstructed. It was lovely to drive in through the park in the open car and we were quickly greeted by elephants, giraffes and eventually lions. Our guide was very friendly and offered us nice insights on the animals we encountered. We felt safe in the car and thoroughly enjoyed being able to look around freely and being in the fresh air all day. We enjoyed a nice lunch and saw many different animals throughout the day. Overall it was a great experience and we would recommend it to others! Make sure you get to the train station in time, so that you have time to go through the security and don't have to rush. Be prepared for a long, but very fun day. It was very unique to get the complete safari experience in just a single day and we were very happy that this was possible. The train ride between Dar and Morogoro in the morning is also quite beautiful and added a lot to our experience.Posted on Esther DVerified Amazing experience My friend and I went on a safari trip tour. Our tour guide was Norman. The day before the Safari trip he came to our hotel to talk us through the safari schedule. He opted to take the train from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro and then continue by a private car. This made the journey so much faster and smooth. We thank him for advising that to us. My friend and I were lucky to see the big 4 from up close. We had a blast and I would definitely recommend him.Posted on DestinyVerified Amazing safari experience My friend and i went on our first ever safari trip with Norman. We went for a private tour. This tour was simply amazing. We traveled early in the morning by train from Dar Es Salaam to Morogoro and traveled by a private car to Mikumi national park. We were lucky to enough to see the big 4! And saw loads of animals up close. Dear Norman, thank you for making our day go smoothly, it was educative and fun. Thank you for being professional. I personally would recommend this tour to others or do this all over again!Posted on Scott TVerified Land Cruiser a Beast Very good service through Norman and hassle free when dealing with him for vehicle pickup. Land Cruiser we rented off him was an old beauty and got through the rigours of safari without troublePosted on Harelimana BVerified Visite de Dar es Salam J’ai eu un très chouette tour de la ville de Dar es Salam avec un guide qui connaissait bien sa ville. Je recommande pour une mieux comprendre l’histoire de cette ville.Posted on Lizzie BVerified Amazing Dar es Salaam city tour We booked our Dar es Salaam city tour through Norman Shayo at Safari Unique Limited and he was so helpful and accommodating! He came to our hostel to organise the details and gave us a tailored unique tour that fitted what we wanted to explore and see. He also gave very reasonable price for the length of the tour provided. The next day, he picked us up in an air conditioned car (very prompt!) with the tour guide Sylvester. Both him and Norman were very friendly and made sure we had everything we needed. We spent about 3.5hrs on the tour and visited a lot of different places, we were able to get out of the car at points and walk around which was very interesting. Our favourite place was the fish market! Overall we had a great experience with Norman and Sylvester, would definitely recommend booking through them for a well priced and well organised tour of Dar es salaam! (They also offer other day trips form the city, Norman’s number is +255754292801) Thanks!Posted on Teh MVerified Good experience We organised part of our trip through Safari Unique Limited with Norman Shayo (WhatsApp: +255754292801). He helped us to organise our ferry tickets to and from Zanzibar, as well as a car rental for ten days for travel through Tanzania from Dar Es Salaam to Arusha and back. We found the replies were quick and informative and easy to coordinate our trip on WhatsApp. We did find that you have to pay in cash which is good to know in advance!
