Ready for an adventure of a lifetime? Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is a truly unforgettable experience, offering breathtaking landscapes and a powerful sense of achievement. While the Marangu Route—often called the “Coca-Cola Route”—features a gradual ascent and hut accommodations, it is also the most crowded and offers less scenic variety compared to other trails on the mountain.
For a more rewarding and immersive journey, we recommend exploring alternative routes that provide diverse landscapes, fewer crowds, and better acclimatization profiles. With Exceptional Voyage, you’ll be guided by experienced professionals who prioritize your safety, comfort, and overall experience. Let us take you on a route that truly showcases the beauty of Kilimanjaro and turn your dream of reaching the summit into reality.

You will be picked up at the Kilimanjaro International Airport and transferred to your hotel in Arusha city; you will meet your guide who will brief you on your upcoming trek and do an equipment check to make sure you have all the necessary mountain gear. The missing gear can be rented on this day.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Included
After breakfast, you will be collected from your lodge in Moshi and taken to the Marangu gate. Once the necessary paper work has been completed, your trek can begin and you will soon be hiking through the dense rainforest. Alongside the impressive vegetation, you will have the chance to catch a glimpse of some primates as you head to the Mandara Hut. After a well-earned rest, your guide can take you to the Maundi Crater where you can enjoy the wonderful view of the Kenyan interior.
Distance covered: 8.3km / 5.2mi
Approx. time taken: 5 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Included
The day begins with an early breakfast. Shortly after you have left Mandara Hut, you will reach the timberline and then enter the heath and moor zone. Approximately 4 – 6 hours later, the Horombo Hut will come into sight, standing at an altitude of 3700m. From the hut, you will have fantastic views overlooking Mawenzi, Kibo and the wide plain of the Masai steppe.
Distance covered: 12.5km / 7.8mi
Approx. time taken: 9 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Included
Today serves as an acclimatization day. This should not be underestimated and greatly improves your chance of success in reaching the summit. After a relaxing breakfast, a 4 hour trek follows to the Zebra Rocks (4020m). The distinctive black and white stripes give the rock formation its name. On your return to Horombo Hut, a warm lunch will be waiting for you. You can relax in the afternoon and regain your strength for the hike the following day.
Distance covered: 5km / 3.1mi
Approx. time taken: 4 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Included
Today’s stage is long and tough. The well-built trail passes the “Last Water point” which is followed by the so-called “saddle”. This nearly vegetation less plateau joins the main summit Kibo with Mawenzi. Today’s destination is the Kibo Hut that is usually reached in about 5 – 6 hours. Here, you will enjoy an early evening meal followed by an early night, as the night will be short.
Distance covered: 9.5km / 5.9mi
Approx. time taken: 7 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Included
Today is “The Big Day” – the summit stage. You will begin your final ascent around midnight which will be long and strenuous. Passing the Hans Meyer Cave at 5220m, the climb slowly but surely goes upwards. At sunrise, you will reach Gillman’s Point (5681m) – the crater rim of Kilimanjaro – where the sun will slowly start to warm up the land. You will have soon forgotten the cold of the night and after a further hike of 1 – 2 hours, you will reach Uhuru Peak at 5895m. On your return to Kibo Hut, a warm meal awaits you followed by a 1 – 2 hour break before proceeding back down to Horombo Hut.
Distance covered: 22km / 13.7mi
Approx. time taken: 12 – 15 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Included
The last stage passes through the heath and moor zone to the Mandara Hut (2700m) where a warm lunch is waiting for you. Soon, you will once again pass the tropical rainforest and after a total time of 6 hours trekking, you will be back at the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate (1860m). After saying goodbye to your mountain guides, a short transfer follows to take you back to your hotel in Moshi. Once there, you can take a warm and relaxing shower and celebrate your success in reaching the summit of Kilimanjaro.
Distance covered: 20.8km / 12.9mi
Approx. time taken: 8 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Included
The day is left free to wind down after the trek before your flight home. Depending on flight times you could go and explore Moshi town and grab some souvenirs before heading to the airport.

The Rongai Route is the only trail that approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the northern side, near the Kenyan border, offering a quieter and more remote climbing experience. Despite its growing popularity, it remains one of the less crowded routes, making it an excellent choice for those seeking solitude or an alternative to busier paths like the Marangu Route. It is also considered a great option during the rainy season, as the northern side of the mountain typically receives less precipitation.
This route requires a minimum of six days, though a seven-day itinerary is highly recommended for better acclimatization and increased summit success. While the scenery may be less varied compared to western routes, Rongai compensates with extended stretches through true wilderness, allowing climbers to experience untouched landscapes before joining the Marangu Route at Kibo Camp for the final ascent. The descent follows the Marangu Route, and overall, Rongai is regarded as a moderately difficult trek—well suited for climbers with less backpacking experience who still want a rewarding and scenic Kilimanjaro adventure.
Ready for a thrilling adventure? Take on the Machame Route on Mount Kilimanjaro—often called the “Whiskey Route” for its challenging yet highly rewarding climb. This route is perfect for adventurers seeking a more dynamic and scenic trekking experience.
Unlike the easier Marangu Route, Machame features steeper trails and longer trekking days, but rewards you with breathtaking views at every stage. Beginning at Machame Gate, the trail winds through lush rainforest before opening up toward the Shira Plateau, then continues along the scenic southern circuit, offering panoramic vistas around the mountain. The climb is typically completed over seven days, allowing for better acclimatization and a more comfortable ascent. With nights spent camping under the stars, this route delivers a true wilderness experience. Join Exceptional Voyage for an unforgettable Kilimanjaro journey filled with challenge, beauty, and lasting memories.
The Umbwe Route is the shortest, steepest, and most direct path up Mount Kilimanjaro, making it one of the most physically demanding routes on the mountain. Its rapid ascent profile offers very limited time for proper altitude acclimatization, which significantly reduces summit success rates compared to other routes. While it sees very little traffic and provides a more secluded climbing experience, the difficulty level makes it a serious challenge even for experienced trekkers.
The route is typically completed in a minimum of six days, though a seven-day itinerary is strongly recommended to slightly improve acclimatization. Due to its demanding nature, the Umbwe Route is best suited only for very strong and experienced hikers who are confident in their ability to handle altitude quickly. For most climbers, however, this route is not recommended, as safer and more gradual options on Kilimanjaro offer a much higher chance of reaching the summit successfully.
Mt. Meru which is Tanzania’s second highest mountain standing tall at 4,566m. It is located in Arusha National Park and offers some of the most spectacular scenery and wildlife diversity of any mountain in Tanzania. Mt. Meru is a challenging trek due to its steepness, but is a great way to acclimatize before attempting Mt. Kilimanjaro. Climbers are accompanied by an armed ranger due to the abundance of wildlife on the lower slopes. Mt. Meru also has some historical significance to it whereby some have suggested that it was the resting place of Noah’s Ark when it came to rest after the biblical flood receded. Mt. Meru is a great trekking option for those who want to take on a climbing challenge and get the sense of being out in the wild, but are not quite ready to tackle Mt. Kilimanjaro.
The Umbwe Route is the shortest, steepest, and most direct trail on Mount Kilimanjaro, making it widely regarded as the most challenging way to reach the summit. Its rapid ascent allows very little time for proper altitude acclimatization, which significantly lowers the chances of success compared to other routes. While it offers a remote and uncrowded experience, the demanding nature of this trail makes it suitable only for highly experienced and physically strong hikers.
The route is typically completed in a minimum of six days, though a seven-day itinerary is recommended to slightly improve acclimatization. Despite this, the limited adjustment time to altitude remains a major challenge. For this reason, the Umbwe Route is generally not advised for most climbers, as safer and more gradual routes provide a higher success rate and a more enjoyable overall experience on Kilimanjaro.

EXCELLENT Based on 50 reviews Posted on Silvia MVerified Unique experience through Dar Es Salam with an amazing guide! I had a private tour with a very special guide (Norman Shayo from Unique Safari LTD) through Dar es Salaam' a streets, artisan markets, colours, food and beautiful moments. Norman is well prepared, kind, attentive and always available, and went also out of the program to give even a better experience. Highly recommended! Thanks Richard and have a beautiful life together with your family!Posted on travel 360Verified Visit Mikumi National park from Dar es salaam For Mikumi safaris you may choose this safaris Company which is also recomended by ATA Safaris ... they have best safaris plan for Mikumi national parks operates from Dar es salaamPosted on Jasper KVerified Awesome one day safari in Mikumi! My family and I had a great experience during this safari! After waking up early and travelling to the train station, the rest of the day was planned meticulously. I had planned the trip the previous week by contacting Norman Shayo of Safari Unique Unlimited through whatsapp (+255754292801), and we were able to plan the safari without any trouble. He was available for any questions and ensured that our safari went according to plan. We travelled by high speed train to Morogoro and were subsequently picked up by a car waiting for us that took us to Mikumi. We arrived at the park and transferred to a open roof car where we could look around completely unobstructed. It was lovely to drive in through the park in the open car and we were quickly greeted by elephants, giraffes and eventually lions. Our guide was very friendly and offered us nice insights on the animals we encountered. We felt safe in the car and thoroughly enjoyed being able to look around freely and being in the fresh air all day. We enjoyed a nice lunch and saw many different animals throughout the day. Overall it was a great experience and we would recommend it to others! Make sure you get to the train station in time, so that you have time to go through the security and don't have to rush. Be prepared for a long, but very fun day. It was very unique to get the complete safari experience in just a single day and we were very happy that this was possible. The train ride between Dar and Morogoro in the morning is also quite beautiful and added a lot to our experience.Posted on Esther DVerified Amazing experience My friend and I went on a safari trip tour. Our tour guide was Norman. The day before the Safari trip he came to our hotel to talk us through the safari schedule. He opted to take the train from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro and then continue by a private car. This made the journey so much faster and smooth. We thank him for advising that to us. My friend and I were lucky to see the big 4 from up close. We had a blast and I would definitely recommend him.Posted on DestinyVerified Amazing safari experience My friend and i went on our first ever safari trip with Norman. We went for a private tour. This tour was simply amazing. We traveled early in the morning by train from Dar Es Salaam to Morogoro and traveled by a private car to Mikumi national park. We were lucky to enough to see the big 4! And saw loads of animals up close. Dear Norman, thank you for making our day go smoothly, it was educative and fun. Thank you for being professional. I personally would recommend this tour to others or do this all over again!Posted on Scott TVerified Land Cruiser a Beast Very good service through Norman and hassle free when dealing with him for vehicle pickup. Je recommande pour une mieux comprendre l’histoire de cette ville.Posted on Lizzie BVerified Amazing Dar es Salaam city tour We booked our Dar es Salaam city tour through Norman Shayo at Safari Unique Limited and he was so helpful and accommodating! He came to our hostel to organise the details and gave us a tailored unique tour that fitted what we wanted to explore and see. He also gave very reasonable price for the length of the tour provided. The next day, he picked us up in an air conditioned car (very prompt!) with the tour guide Sylvester. Both him and Norman were very friendly and made sure we had everything we needed. We spent about 3.5hrs on the tour and visited a lot of different places, we were able to get out of the car at points and walk around which was very interesting. Our favourite place was the fish market! Overall we had a great experience with Norman and Sylvester, would definitely recommend booking through them for a well priced and well organised tour of Dar es salaam! (They also offer other day trips form the city, Norman’s number is +255754292801) Thanks!Posted on Teh MVerified Good experience We organised part of our trip through Safari Unique Limited with Norman Shayo (WhatsApp: +255754292801). He helped us to organise our ferry tickets to and from Zanzibar, as well as a car rental for ten days for travel through Tanzania from Dar Es Salaam to Arusha and back. We found the replies were quick and informative and easy to coordinate our trip on WhatsApp. We did find that you have to pay in cash which is good to know in advance!
