  5. 6 Days Kilimanjaro Marangu Route
Tour Overview

Is This Trip for Me?

Ready for an adventure of a lifetime? Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is a truly unforgettable experience, offering breathtaking landscapes and a powerful sense of achievement. While the Marangu Route—often called the “Coca-Cola Route”—features a gradual ascent and hut accommodations, it is also the most crowded and offers less scenic variety compared to other trails on the mountain.

For a more rewarding and immersive journey, we recommend exploring alternative routes that provide diverse landscapes, fewer crowds, and better acclimatization profiles. With Exceptional Voyage, you’ll be guided by experienced professionals who prioritize your safety, comfort, and overall experience. Let us take you on a route that truly showcases the beauty of Kilimanjaro and turn your dream of reaching the summit into reality.

Your Route Through Tanzania

We have carefully planned each day to give you the best experience. From exploring landmarks to tasting local cuisine, each day is filled with adventure and excitement. Join us on a journey through fascinating destinations.

Arrive in Tanzania

You will be picked up at the Kilimanjaro International Airport and transferred to your hotel in Arusha city; you will meet your guide who will brief you on your upcoming trek and do an equipment check to make sure you have all the necessary mountain gear. The missing gear can be rented on this day.

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Included

Day 1: Marangu Gate (1860m) to Mandara Hut (2720m)

After breakfast, you will be collected from your lodge in Moshi and taken to the Marangu gate. Once the necessary paper work has been completed, your trek can begin and you will soon be hiking through the dense rainforest. Alongside the impressive vegetation, you will have the chance to catch a glimpse of some primates as you head to the Mandara Hut. After a well-earned rest, your guide can take you to the Maundi Crater where you can enjoy the wonderful view of the Kenyan interior.

Distance covered: 8.3km / 5.2mi
Approx. time taken: 5 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Included

Day 2: Mandara Hut (2720m) to Horombo Hut (3720m)

The day begins with an early breakfast. Shortly after you have left Mandara Hut, you will reach the timberline and then enter the heath and moor zone. Approximately 4 – 6 hours later, the Horombo Hut will come into sight, standing at an altitude of 3700m. From the hut, you will have fantastic views overlooking Mawenzi, Kibo and the wide plain of the Masai steppe.

Distance covered: 12.5km / 7.8mi
Approx. time taken: 9 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Included

Day 3: Acclimatization trek to Zebra Rocks (4020m) then back to Horombo Hut (3720m)

Today serves as an acclimatization day. This should not be underestimated and greatly improves your chance of success in reaching the summit. After a relaxing breakfast, a 4 hour trek follows to the Zebra Rocks (4020m). The distinctive black and white stripes give the rock formation its name. On your return to Horombo Hut, a warm lunch will be waiting for you. You can relax in the afternoon and regain your strength for the hike the following day.

Distance covered: 5km / 3.1mi
Approx. time taken: 4 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Included

Day 4: Horombo Hut (3720m) to Kibo Hut (4720m)

Today’s stage is long and tough. The well-built trail passes the “Last Water point” which is followed by the so-called “saddle”. This nearly vegetation less plateau joins the main summit Kibo with Mawenzi. Today’s destination is the Kibo Hut that is usually reached in about 5 – 6 hours. Here, you will enjoy an early evening meal followed by an early night, as the night will be short.

Distance covered: 9.5km / 5.9mi
Approx. time taken: 7 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Included

Day 5: Kibo Hut (4720m) to UHURU PEAK (5895m) & down to Horombo Hut (3720m)

Today is “The Big Day” – the summit stage. You will begin your final ascent around midnight which will be long and strenuous. Passing the Hans Meyer Cave at 5220m, the climb slowly but surely goes upwards. At sunrise, you will reach Gillman’s Point (5681m) – the crater rim of Kilimanjaro – where the sun will slowly start to warm up the land. You will have soon forgotten the cold of the night and after a further hike of 1 – 2 hours, you will reach Uhuru Peak at 5895m. On your return to Kibo Hut, a warm meal awaits you followed by a 1 – 2 hour break before proceeding back down to Horombo Hut.

Distance covered: 22km / 13.7mi
Approx. time taken: 12 – 15 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Included

Day 6: Horombo Hut (3700m) to Marangu Gate (1860m)

The last stage passes through the heath and moor zone to the Mandara Hut (2700m) where a warm lunch is waiting for you. Soon, you will once again pass the tropical rainforest and after a total time of 6 hours trekking, you will be back at the Kilimanjaro National Park Gate (1860m). After saying goodbye to your mountain guides, a short transfer follows to take you back to your hotel in Moshi. Once there, you can take a warm and relaxing shower and celebrate your success in reaching the summit of Kilimanjaro.

Distance covered: 20.8km / 12.9mi
Approx. time taken: 8 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Included

The Rongai Route is the only trail that approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the northern side, near the Kenyan border, offering a quieter and more remote climbing experience. Despite its growing popularity, it remains one of the less crowded routes, making it an excellent choice for those seeking solitude or an alternative to busier paths like the Marangu Route. It is also considered a great option during the rainy season, as the northern side of the mountain typically receives less precipitation.

This route requires a minimum of six days, though a seven-day itinerary is highly recommended for better acclimatization and increased summit success. While the scenery may be less varied compared to western routes, Rongai compensates with extended stretches through true wilderness, allowing climbers to experience untouched landscapes before joining the Marangu Route at Kibo Camp for the final ascent. The descent follows the Marangu Route, and overall, Rongai is regarded as a moderately difficult trek—well suited for climbers with less backpacking experience who still want a rewarding and scenic Kilimanjaro adventure.

Ready for a thrilling adventure? Take on the Machame Route on Mount Kilimanjaro—often called the “Whiskey Route” for its challenging yet highly rewarding climb. This route is perfect for adventurers seeking a more dynamic and scenic trekking experience.

Unlike the easier Marangu Route, Machame features steeper trails and longer trekking days, but rewards you with breathtaking views at every stage. Beginning at Machame Gate, the trail winds through lush rainforest before opening up toward the Shira Plateau, then continues along the scenic southern circuit, offering panoramic vistas around the mountain. The climb is typically completed over seven days, allowing for better acclimatization and a more comfortable ascent. With nights spent camping under the stars, this route delivers a true wilderness experience. Join Exceptional Voyage for an unforgettable Kilimanjaro journey filled with challenge, beauty, and lasting memories.

The Umbwe Route is the shortest, steepest, and most direct path up Mount Kilimanjaro, making it one of the most physically demanding routes on the mountain. Its rapid ascent profile offers very limited time for proper altitude acclimatization, which significantly reduces summit success rates compared to other routes. While it sees very little traffic and provides a more secluded climbing experience, the difficulty level makes it a serious challenge even for experienced trekkers.

The route is typically completed in a minimum of six days, though a seven-day itinerary is strongly recommended to slightly improve acclimatization. Due to its demanding nature, the Umbwe Route is best suited only for very strong and experienced hikers who are confident in their ability to handle altitude quickly. For most climbers, however, this route is not recommended, as safer and more gradual options on Kilimanjaro offer a much higher chance of reaching the summit successfully.

Mt. Meru which is Tanzania’s second highest mountain standing tall at 4,566m. It is located in Arusha National Park and offers some of the most spectacular scenery and wildlife diversity of any mountain in Tanzania. Mt. Meru is a challenging trek due to its steepness, but is a great way to acclimatize before attempting Mt. Kilimanjaro. Climbers are accompanied by an armed ranger due to the abundance of wildlife on the lower slopes. Mt. Meru also has some historical significance to it whereby some have suggested that it was the resting place of Noah’s Ark when it came to rest after the biblical flood receded. Mt. Meru is a great trekking option for those who want to take on a climbing challenge and get the sense of being out in the wild, but are not quite ready to tackle Mt. Kilimanjaro.

The Umbwe Route is the shortest, steepest, and most direct trail on Mount Kilimanjaro, making it widely regarded as the most challenging way to reach the summit. Its rapid ascent allows very little time for proper altitude acclimatization, which significantly lowers the chances of success compared to other routes. While it offers a remote and uncrowded experience, the demanding nature of this trail makes it suitable only for highly experienced and physically strong hikers.

The route is typically completed in a minimum of six days, though a seven-day itinerary is recommended to slightly improve acclimatization. Despite this, the limited adjustment time to altitude remains a major challenge. For this reason, the Umbwe Route is generally not advised for most climbers, as safer and more gradual routes provide a higher success rate and a more enjoyable overall experience on Kilimanjaro.
